Life is boring without some excitement activites. Likewise in diving world, you are not a real diver if you have yet to try the night diving!. Night diving is like doing a night trekking in a jungle with a flashlight.
Although you are familiar with the dive spots during the day, night diving is still challenging because you’ll rely solely on your waterproof flashlight. But think of the thrills and adventuresome you will experience when ‘visiting’ their habitat. You will have the opportunities to see different aqua species which usually inactive during the day.
Here are some guides for diving at night:
1. Make yourself comfortable and familiar with night diving by practicing in a swimming pool during the night without lights. This will build your confidence when diving in open water.
2. Prior to your night diving trip, ensure that you have dive in the same spot during the day. This will give you a basic idea of the surroundings, underwater current and the depth. If there are wrecks around the area, make sure you have observed the potential area that maybe risky to you (example; entangled your dive gears).
3. Plan your night dive early before you’re covered with total darkness. Starting your night dive at twilight will give you some extra lights for you to prepare your gears and do a buddy checks.
4. Remember to check your flashlight batteries and do a final check of your flashlight before you jump into the water.
5. Stay close with your dive buddy especially if you’re a first timer. Always aware of your buddy’s movement as it will be quite difficult if you’re left behind and not realized by your buddy.
6. Ensure you regularly check your depth gauge and air supply. As you’re diving in the dark, it is difficult to estimate your depth by looking at the sea bed, so don’t be careless!
7. Carry two flashlights – one for your primary and second for your backup light in case the primary fails.
8. Do not play around by pointing the flashlight to your dive buddies as it will cause temporary blind. If you’re too close with your buddies and afraid you’ll accidentally pointing at them, point the flashlight close to your body.
9. Use the night dive strobber light or a night-stick so you can be easily sighted during the dive.
Happy Night Diving!
